URPoint Details

Hinchingbrooke House, Brampton Rd, (1m W of Huntingdon)

Open Sunday & Bank Holiday Monday 2pm to 5pm from April to September. A Performing Arts Centre has also been established in the grounds which has excellent conference facilities available. Lovely, delicious cream teas are available in the Tudor kitchens.

This Tudor country house was built around an early 13th century Benedictine nunnery, you can still see the surrounding walls today. Given by Henry VIII to Richard Cromwell at the time of the Dissolution, the house was enlarged and altered and became the ancestral home of the Cromwells in 1538. Queen Elizabeth I also visited as did King James I.

The next owners of the house were the Montagu family, later the Earls of Sandwich who also played an important role in British history. The 160 acres of delightful grounds and country park are well worth walking around.
