Witchcraft was often blamed when cream wouldn’t churn to butter. When this happened in Yorkshire, dairy maids used to throw a crooked sixpence and cast a churn spell into the cream.
Householders in Yorkshire erected witch posts to protect their properties. These were beams carved with horizontal lines and a St Andrews cross and then placed over the hearth. Only a handful of witch posts survive, some can be seen at the Rydale Folk Museum at Hutton le Hole
