York

A Roman city and military base established at the end of the 1st century has given York many fine historic stages of historic events.
York Minister is an impressive church 524ft long and 249ft wide and rebuilt in the 13th century on a site of a Saxon church.

There are so many historic buildings to be seen including the ‘Shambles’ and ‘Stonegate’ are well preserved medieval streets and laneways.

There are a few oddities in York not to be missed including a signpost pointing the way to the castle museum with a highwayman and a gibbet on the top of it. Another is Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate, where felons were once whipped. The Burton Stone, at the Burtonstone inn, in Burtonstone Lane is where Mother Shipton rested and may also have been used during cholera outbreaks, where the inhabitants would place vinegar and the traders would leave their goods. The Roman Multangular Tower is so called as it has many corners.
