Yarm

Yarm , England

URPoint Details

Once an important port and market town and cobbled verges still gives market square proportions to the High Street, between Georgian facades.
The Market Hall dates from 1710 and there are marks showing how high the floods have been which devastated the town. The first line shows the flood of 1771 when the waters rose 7ft. The second line dates from 1881 with a line 4ft high.
The plaque on the George and Dragon Inn states that a meeting was held here on February 12, 1820 to discuss the Stockton and Darlington Railway.
From the High Street, Chapel Street leads east down to the octagonal chapel where John Wesley preached, while Church Wynd leads to a part Norman church.
