Little remains of the 13th century Augustinian priory and most of the mansion on the site dates from the 17th century.
The church contains a notable alabaster tomb, dated 1631, a fine screen, and much carved woodwork. Lord North the 18th century Prime Minister is buried in the church and also that of Thomas Cook, the famous banker of the period.
Most of the cottages in this pretty village are tawny brown ironstone and thatch.
One of the cottages was the village Post Office and still has the posting box in the wall.
There is a cross known as Dick Turpin’s Cross.
