URPoint Details
Early history is obscure but the church was built on the site of Viroconium, the fourth largest Roman town in Britain.
You enter St Andrew’s Church, (Churches Conservation Trust) between Roman columns, the north wall of the nave incorporates massive Roman blocks and the huge font facing one through the porch is part of a Roman capital. A church stood here at the time of the Norman Conquest and Domesday reported it in 1086 as part of a collegiate establishment, but there are obvious signs of construction of many different dates. Inside, the spirit of the 17th and 18th century prevails with excellent wood work. There are three handsome 16th century monuments with effigies and there is also a magnificent 14th century chest.
