The village meets at the Roman Road and the road from Pickering and the crossing is marked by a tiny green set amongst sturdy Georgian farms and houses and a substantial restored cruck building dated 1665.
An ancient ale house The Buck Inn has many curios such as an old witness dock from Pickering Magistrates Court. In 1779 the village had its own brewhouse and served ‘Old Tom’ ale to passing stagecoach travellers.
