URPoint Details
An attractive grey-stone village set in an almost treeless area where the spectacular Purbeck marble comes from.
From a farm ½ mile west of the village a track leads to St Aldhelm’s Head, a coastguard station, with a sturdy Norman chapel.
From the head, above the cliffs nearly 400ft high offers magnificent views along the coast.
From the same farm there is another track which descends into a beautiful winding valley to Chapmans Pool, a cove good for fossil hunting and seeing cormorants.
The Church of St Nicholas of Myra is mainly Norman but there still signs of the Anglo-Saxon period. It has an interesting chancel and south doorway. The chancel was lovingly restored in the 13th century as was the 14th century east window.
