In 1835 Sir Marcus Sandys returned from India with a recipe for Worcestershire sauce. He commissioned a Worcester pharmacy owned by John Lea and William Perrins to produce it. The mixture proved to be inedible, but when some jars of it were discovered three years later the taste had improved considerably. The two men then bought the recipe from Sir Marcus and started manufacturing the sauce.
