The earliest recorded date of the village was in 1166 when the church of St Mary was bestowed on Newnham Priory by Simon de Beauchamp in his foundation Charter, confirmed by his son William, also Henry II, and afterwards by Edward II in 1317.
The Manor of Wootton belonged to Albert of Lorraine when the Domesday Book was complied. It was formerly held with power of sale by Almae, a homager of Earl Tosti.
The plague is believed to have hit the village in 1604 when 48 people died.
