URPoint Details
Set high on a hill is an attractive small town with many styles of architecture.
In 1700 the 1st Earl of Rochester built the half-timbered town hall. It was restored in 1889 and the library is reached by a spectacular oak staircase. Under a stone colonnade still stand the old stocks and ducking stool and there is an old fire engine complete with wooden wheels.
The church dates from the 13th century and has an old panelled roof to the nave complete with stars, was enlarged by Street in 1870. Both the priest’s room above the vaulted south porch and the splendid Elizabethan painted pulpit are interesting.
