The river Deben which flows through Woodbridge to the North Sea made the town a busy seaport and bears witness to the town's history of ship-building, rope-making and sail-making.
Both Edward III in the 14th century and Sir Francis Drake in the 16th century, used ships built here as fighting ships.
Thomas Seckford a well known Elizabethan benefactor did much to mould the character of the town and his name is commemorated in Seckford Hall, a Tudor mansion of distinction.
There are a number of architectural interest including The Shire Hall, on Market Hill is a lovely 16th century building, The Bell, Angel and King’s Head Inns, and the beautiful Georgian houses.
