URPoint Details
Two villages, now one parish but both have stories to tell.
The Witton village sign shows a post mill, the church and Highland cattle. The mill was on the extreme eastern boundary until about 1925. There had been a mill on the site since at least 1797. The round house is still there in the grounds of Mill Farm House.
The church of St Margaret has a Saxon round tower and several Saxon windows, and formerly wall paintings were visible. One lord of the manor Lord Wodehouse, had the top of the tower repaired and it can still be distinguished, it cost him £200.
Ridlington’s village sign shows an owl, the church and a plough. For years an owl had a nest in an elm tree and there are some around the village.
The church of St Peter has the four evangelists for pinnacles. In the First World War the chancel end was extensively damaged by a bomb dropped from a Zeppelin.
