Witney - Church of St Mary the Virgin

Witney - Church of St Mary the Virgin

Church Green, Witney OX28 4AW, England

URPoint Details

The Church of St Mary the Virgin, stands at the head of a long sward of green stretching from the Buttercross, in Witney.
The 13th century church is one of the largest in the county, and owes its size to the palace of the Bishops of Winchester, the ruins of which are at the east end of the church. The exterior is magnificent and the massive pinnacled tower and spire form an imposing landmark. The interior has a rather bleak appearance owing to excessive restoration by Street in the 19th century, but in the north transept is a beautiful 14th century window with flowering tracery giving the impression of an opening blossom. In the south transept is a table tomb of Richard Wedham a wool merchant who died in 1501. Brasses show him with his two wives and seven children.
