URPoint Details

The place-name "Witney" is first attested in a Saxon charter of 969 as "Wyttannige"; it appears as "Witenie" in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name means "Witta's island"

Founded by Saxon kings in the 10th century, Witney is full of history and in the heyday of the woollen and blanket trades much of the town architecture was established. The spacious Church Green and the 18th century Georgian suburb of Woodgreen enhance the town. In Woodgreen, the Church of the Holy Trinity was consecrated in 1849, and was built in the Gothic Revival style, the architect being Benjamin Ferrey, a pupil of Augustus Pugin.

Witney Blanket Hall built in the 18th century, has a one handed clock.
