URPoint Details
The parish was mentioned in the Domesday Book and the village has a fine claim to fame. Just out of the village is The Bowthorpe Oak, with a trunk of about 40ft and thought to be over 500 years old. The trunk was hollowed out in the 17th century, creating a room in which 39 people have stood together. On one occasion, it is said, 16 people sat down to afternoon tea inside the oak.
The spacious Church of St Andrew, dates from the 15th century and has several examples of Norman architecture, including the south aisle, the arch and doorway of the south porch. The tower and spire were rebuilt in 1738.
