Wirksworth is an attractive market town with many historic buildings and features at the foot of the Peak District. The town attained prosperity as a centre for lead mining. Quarrying has also been an important industry in the area and, in addition, the town has been the home to several textile companies, in particular producing 'red tape'.
DH Lawrence called it exactly the navel of England, attractions include The Heritage Centre, nearby National Stone Centre, Middleton Top Engine House and Cycle Hire Centre and the Black Rocks Picnic Site.
The Heritage Centre, Crown Yard, Market Place. Open February to December. Last admission 45 minutes before closing time. Small admission charge.
Interpretive display's of town's past, present and future, in particular the lead mining industry. Also a cafe and Smithy.
Crown Yard also holds various workshops and an antique shop.
The Moot Hall, The hall can be found between North End and the West End car park. It was from this building that the lead mining industry of the area was controlled.
