Winterbourne

Winterbourne , England

URPoint Details

Standing on a tributary of the Lambourn, the compact village of Winterbourne has a 16th century manor house and a church, which was largely rebuilt in the latter half of the 19th century. It retains the north chapel of 1712 and the brick-built battlemented tower of 1759.
Northwest of the village is Hop Castle, a delightful flint-built folly used as a hunting lodge in Georgian times. It has an entrance hall and staircase whose walls are covered, rather like a grotto, with embedded shells and pebbles.
The parish also includes much of Snelsmore Common which is now a Country Park with interesting walks and picnic areas.
Here also is the ancient earthwork, the Black Ditch.
