The town is made up of the two ancient town of Over and Wharton which sit on either side of the River Weaver. Both towns were mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Over has had a borough charter since 1300 and the 14th century church of St Chad and has a priest’s chamber over the south door and apart of a Saxon cross can be seen in the pillar in the chancel.
At Vale Royal, are the remains of a Cistercian monastery founded by Edward I in 1277 and the largest ever built in England.
