URPoint Details
Little remains of William the Conqueror’s fortress, from which Empress Mathilda escaped in a coffin in the 12th century. Most of it was destroyed in the Civil War but the 13th century Great Hall can still be seen.
The Hall was the meeting place of the first English Parliament and the scene of many famous trials, including some held by the notorious Judge Jeffreys in 1685.
