Carpets have been made here since Saxon times and given a Royal Charter by William III in 1699 is the oldest borough in England.
The name is derived from ‘Wiltonshire’. In 871 King Alfred founded an abbey here where Wilton House stands today.

The 18th century market house in the town square from where a series of ruined arches leads to restored Gothic church.

In 1544 the Abbey of Wilton was dissolved and given to William Herbert, 1st Earl Pembroke, by Henry VIII.
Soon after Wilton House was completed and the delightful entrance porch no longer attached to the main building remains.
