URPoint Details
After a fire in 1647 the house was redesigned by Inigo Jones and his son-in-law John Webb and the east front still shows their work as do the seven magnificent state rooms. Most remarkable of these are the double and the single cub rooms. The cube is exactly 30ft long, wide and high.
An imposing triumphal arch topped with a statue of Marcus Aurelius, stands at the entrance to the north side of the house.
In 1800 James Wyatt made some alterations mainly to the north and west fronts.
Wilton contains some spectacular furniture and a superb collection of art including paintings by Ruebens, Van Dyck and Tintoretto.
The gardens are delightful and have some remarkable old cedar trees and a Palladian bridge over the Nadder.
