William Ewart Gladstone lived in the magnificent Hawarden Castle for over sixty years and died there in 1898. The castle came to him in 1839 by his marriage to Catherine, daughter and heiress of Sir Stephen Glynne.
The parish church has a Gladstone memorial and a memorable Burne-Jones window.
