William Dampier was born here in 1651 and died in 1715. He lived in Hymerford House.
He mapped Australia and inspired Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe'. He also piloted the ship which rescued Alexander Selkirk (Robinson Crusoe) in 1708. His voyage round the World was in 1697.
