William Butler Yeats was born in Dublin on 13 June 1865.
His first volume of verse was published in 1886 ‘Mosada A Dramatic Poem’, followed by ‘The Wanderings of Oisin’ in 1889. ‘The Celtic Twilight’ was released in 1893 and in 1894
He met Lady Gregory who became his patron and between them they researched Irish folklore. In 1899 ‘The Wind Among the Reeds’ was released and this was the beginning of a new phase of writing style for him. ‘The Green Helmet’ in 1910, ‘Responsibilities’ in 1914, ‘The Wild Swans’ at Coole in 1919.’ Michael Robartes and the Dancer’ in 1921, ‘The Tower in 1928’, ‘The Winding Stair and Other Poems’ in 1933, ‘A Full Moon’ in March in 1935 ‘ Last Poems’ in 1939.
He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923.
He died in France on 28 January 1939 and in 1948 his wish came true to buried in Drumcliffe, Co. Sligo. His headstone bears the famous inscription ‘Cast a cold eye on life, on death, horseman pass by’.
