Wigton also known as the ‘Throstle Nest’ is a delightful market town and in 1262 was granted permission to hold a market.
The red sandstone church of St Mary dates from 1788 on the site of an earlier church. The monument in the church is thought to be pre-Reformation and the church Registers date back to 1604.
The old parish pump and tall gas lamp in West Road were immortalised by Charles Dickens in his novel ‘The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices’.
