The Romans were here and built a fort as a defence against the Picts and Celts.
A Royal charter was granted to the town in 1246.
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal linked Wigan to Liverpool in 1791 brought the Industrial Revolution here although coal had been mined since the 14th century.
The parish Church of All Saints is 19th century but was founded in the 13th century, some fine 14th century monuments.
