Widnes over the centuries was just a collection of small villages, but then the railway and age of steam arrived. In 1845 the Runcorn Gap and St Helens Railway Company completed the world’s first railway, canal and dock complex.
Coal from Lancashire and salt from Cheshire and Widnes began to grow and prosper.
