URPoint Details
West of Newbury on the Roman route to Cirencester high between the Kennet and Lambourn valleys, Wickham is a charming village of thatched cottages and with a church whose tower is Saxon.
St Swithun's is a unique church with its Saxon tower, the rest of the building was re-fashioned around 1850.
The nave roof is supported by angels and the aisle roof, rather surprisingly, by elephants all made of papier-mache and shown at the 1862 Paris Exhibition.
The old rectory, of the 19th century, has a quite splendid Gothic bay window and is pinnacled.
