This late Tudor manor dates from 1593. The manor of Whitwell was purchased by Sir John Manners of Haddon Hall from Elizabeth Hardycke a distant relation to Bess of Hardwick, in 1592. The Manners family built and owned the hall, now owned by a private owner.

The Hall is of great architectural interest for it has an unusual ground floor plan. In the cellars there is a cistern for spring water, popularly, but erroneously known as a well. The hall has an impressive oak panelled room, six panels high. It has the original fireplace, panelled around with a Georgian cast iron basket grate inserted into it. The Great Hall has been transformed into a private museum with artifacts collected by the owner.

The gardens are spectacular and include: a fruit garden, a rose garden, a fern garden, herb garden and a wild garden. The Victoria Albert Museum houses a painting of the hall titled 'Whitwell Hall, Church and Crag' dated 1785 by Samuel Hieronymous Grimm.
