Said to be the cradle of Christianity in Scotland, was founded in the 5th century (St Ninian's Candida Casa', the Shining Light).
St Ninian's Cave & Chapel (southwest of Whithorn) is traditionally associated with the saint. The cave is a long walk, but worth the visit to see the weathered carved crosses on the wall.
Pilgrims on their way to Whithorn, probably used the 13th century Chapel.
