Whitchurch - Hampshire

Whitchurch

URPoint Details

The village became a town when silk was introduced, and there are some interesting buildings including the old pub The White Hart, and a silk mill on the river Test which was once water driven but now powered by electricity. The mill stands on a site of an earlier corn mill mentioned in the Domesday Book.

A footpath from the village crosses the river twice on its way to the hamlet of Tufton.

The church was restored in Victorian times and contains some fine treasures. There is an Anglo-Saxon gravestone and there is a 9th century inscription in Latin reads: ‘Here lies the body of Frithburga, buried in peace’, and above is a bust of Christ. There is also a 17th century panel showing the Commandments and biblical scenes and a remarkable set of steps leading to the belfry.
