URPoint Details
Toilets; parking; dogs on leads only; suitable for picnics. This is an ancient holy place, once a burial-place of kings and an inspiration for saints. A religious community was first established here in 657 by Abbess Hilda and was the home of Caedmon, the first English poet. The remains today are of a Benedictine church built in the 13th and 14th centuries, and include a magnificent three-tier choir and north transept. It is perched high above the picturesque harbour town of Whitby.
