WHERWELL (pronounced Orrell)
Situated in the Test valley, once the home of a Benedictine Abbey founded in AD 986 by Elfrida widow of the Saxon King Edgar.
The Priory an early 19th century house now stands on the site. There is a stream running under the house, said to have been diverted from the river Test.
The village has many beautiful black and white, heavily thatched cottages.
