West Woodhay

West Woodhay , England

URPoint Details

South-west of Newbury close to Walbury Hill and in a well-wooded countryside is West Woodhay.

The church was built, with nave and chancel all under one roof, in 1883 to Sir Arthur Blomfield's designs. The east window is by Burne-Jones and also of interest are three sculptured wood putti (small cherubic boys) which were brought from Scotland. West Woodhay House was built in 1635 to Inigo Jones designs and for Sir Benjamin Rudyard, the so-called 'silver trumpet' of the Long Parliament. He, in fact, sat in Parliament for 24 years.

Later extensions to the house have now been removed and the building can again be seen in its pristine Inigo Jones splendour.
