The Saxons had a settlement here and once a centre of the iron industry, the town is beautifully situated on a ridge with fine views to the south.
Old houses include the manor house and the 15th century priest’s house and to the north is Gravetye Manor and Elizabeth house.
Smugglers used to signal down the valley from the church tower before meeting at the Cat Inn.
Great-upon-Little is a large sandstone rock balanced on a smaller, in the grounds of Rockhurst.
The church has 13th century windows and a fine brass to Ann Tree, one of the martyr’s in the reign of Queen Mary I.
