A 17th century house re-fronted in the early 18th century and remodelled and extended after 1746 for General Henry Hawley, whose brutality in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden earned him the name of ‘Hangman Hawley’. It was given to the National Trust by Sir Victor Sassoon in 1957. The house is red-brick, with sash windows and pedimented dormers; hipped roof with stone vases at the corners and the west front has busts in niches.
The interior is dominated by a 2-storey panelled saloon which takes up a quarter of the building.
