West Dean (Wiltshire)

West Dean , England

URPoint Details

The Romans were here and there are still some remains. The village lying on the river is such a pretty place with some thatch, a green and two churches.

Of St Mary’s Church only the 14th century Decorated chantry remains but there are some fine monuments.

From Dean Hill which rises to 500ft near the village there are some remarkable views over the country as they are from Pepperbox Hill nearby. This hill owes its name to the shape of a curious tower, known as Eyre’s Folly is a 17th century folly standing in 73 acres of open land, scattered with juniper bushes.
