A greystone village with a charter dating back to 1202 and declined from a busy market town due to the plague in 1563.
The church is a large one and rises beside the river like a little cathedral.
The Restoration font and cover, the early benches and box-pews, and a 15th century screen.
Bolton Hall is a shell of a 17th century house burnt out in 1902.
