Wendover

Wendover , England

URPoint Details

A pleasant historic town, Wendover lies in a gap in the Chilterns on both the road and rail routes from Aylesbury to London. Surrounded by beautiful Chiltern scenery is Coombe Hill which rises to 845 feet. Tucked away amid these hills are two notable houses. Chequers, the country home of Prime Ministers, and Wellwick, where Judge Jeffreys of the notorious Bloody Assize once lived. The main street has a blend of half timbered, thatched and mellowed brick houses, many of the Georgian period.

Chiltern House and the Old House both date from around 1725. Lime Tree House is mid-Georgian, whilst the old post office building dates back to the 16th century. The manor house, now a school, looks Elizabethan but is, in fact, Victorian. The Red Lion, with fine oak panelling, dates from 1619 (and was host to both Oliver Cromwell and Robert Louis Stevenson). Wendover Church is 14th century. although it was extensively restored in 1869, and has some interesting carvings.
Coombe Hill, (NT). Wheelchair accessible, a key for the gate available from cottage nearby.
A steep climb up from Wendover, but a more gradual climb from the NT car park on the road from Butlers Cross to Dunsmore. This lovely
