Georgian and half-timbered houses make Welshpool with its market day dating back to 1263 is a town certainly worth a visit.

At the Cross is a house with the inscription ‘This house was erected by Gilbert and Ann Jones, 1692, whose ancestor, Roger Jones is said to have been the first Jones.

Just beyond Park Lane which leads to the castle is a group of houses one of which the Cross Keys has a Royalist inscription studded in nails over the door ‘G---- d----- old Oliver 1661.

Powis Castle dates back 500 years and has been continually inhabited by the Powis family and the superb castle gardens laid out in 1722 include terraces, ornamental trees, hedges and some great statues.

The town is situated close to the west bank of the River Severn, beyond the wide valley of which rises the Long Mountain at 1,338ft at the Beacon Ring, which divides Wales from Shropshire.

The Post Office is a fine brick building in Broad Street, was originally the Castle Inn.
