Wellow - Nottinghamshire

Wellow

URPoint Details

A maypole on the green is one of only three permanent poles in Britain and at one time the pole would have cut from Sherwood Forest, has been replaced by a steel pole.

Around the green are 17th and 18th century red-brick and pantiled houses and cottages, each built in a different style.

The small parish church of St Swithun’s dates from the 12th century and was built by the masons who had recently completed Rufford Abbey close by. Its sturdy tower rises above the cottages on the eastern side of the green, showing a clock face made by local craftsmen in 1953 to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

A lane climbs up from the village to Wellow Park, the site of a circular hill-fort, 250ft in diameter, known as Jordan’s Castle which is surrounded by a moat.
