Mentioned in the Domesday Book the town was granted market status by King John in 1201. The Rivers Nene and Ise meet at the crossroads.
There are many lovely old buildings and a 15th century stone-built tithe barn
The parish church of All Hallows is 14th century, with a tower and a broach spire. The chancel with its outstanding east window is Decorated. The roof, screens and stalls with misericords are 15th century.
The Victorian St Mary’s Church was built by Sir Ninian Comper is a large and plain outside, but the interior is brilliantly coloured with a fine screen and, suspended above the nave, a large blue and gold painting of Christ in majesty.
