URPoint Details
The village lies in the Lambourn Valley but its parish extends up and over the downs on either side and includes a number of hamlets.
Welford itself is an attractive grouping of cottages, with the little river running under several small bridges, and with a church spire rising from its round tower as a pleasant background.
Although rebuilt in 1855, the church retains Norman and Early English work from its medieval predecessor. The Norman font is tub-shaped and the pulpit, unusually, projects out of the chancel arch wall. Flanking the river is Welford Park, an estate known for its snowdrops, its roaming deer and for the rather elegant 18th century facade to a 17th century house, built of brick with giant pilasters to the facade.
