URPoint Details
To the east of Corby and long ago known as Weldon-in-the-Woods, this large village is best known for its honey-coloured building stone, which has been quarried for centuries. Weldon stone was used to build Rockingham Castle and Great St Mary's Church in Cambridge.
On the village green is the windowless Round House, once used as the parish lock-up.
St Mary's Church, with its backcloth of trees, is reached by a raised bridge over Willow Brook. The church lantern often guided forest travellers in years gone by.
Weldon was the site of a Roman villa which saw its heyday in the 4th century. One of its rooms was over 100ft long.
