This lovely little village was mentioned in the Domesday Book.
King John granted a market charter in the late 1100's and one is still held here every week.
St Mary's church dates back to the 12th century, has a Norman tower and a curious old collecting box.
The clock tower in the High Street dates back to 1679 and has a weather-cock ‘rebus’ or pun on the town name, a ‘hare’ (or wat) and a tun.
There is also a town sign in High Street taken from the legend of the Babes in the Wood.
