URPoint Details
The Romans and Saxons were both here but it was the Saxons who named it Wareham (town by the weir), and during the Civil War the town changed hands many times between the Roundheads and the Royalists.
After fire destroyed most of the buildings in 1762, the architecture became one of the Georgian style, although the town walls are of a much earlier period.
The church of St Martin’s overlooking the harbour has an effigy of Lawrence of Arabia. There is also a stone tomb of Edward the Martyr who died in 978.
