Situated on the banks of the River Lea is an ideal spot for exploring either the lovely town or countryside by foot or by boat. Two rivers cross the town, the Lea and New River. The Lea towpath is lined with trees and houses.

A delightful town with wide clean streets and lovely 16th century buildings, and in the High Street, are a mix of gabled and straight-fronted houses. In West Street is the old town hall, a simple Regency building with its heavy unfluted Ionic columns. Baldock Street has many timber-framed and gabled as well as red-brick houses The Black Bull Inn is one of the best.

Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed queen here in 1553.
