URPoint Details
Close to the M6, Ship Canal and industry, the old church of St Werburgh (Churches Conservation Trust), is secluded and peaceful. Possibly Saxon in origin, the building is timber-framed and of various dates, but in 1645 some walls were rebuilt in stone, the some in brick in 1711 when the southeast tower was added. Inside, wood predominates and timber uprights divide the aisles. The fittings are notable, especially the Jacobean communion rails and pulpit the box pews date from 1813, but look older. Replaces as the parish church in 1883, this is still a cherished place of antiquity and holiness.
It is now a redundant church but services are held in the summer months. Grade I listed building
