Warboys

Warboys , England

URPoint Details

If there is such a village as a nice place to be hanged, then Warboys is probably it. Warboys is, in fact, where the last hanging of a witch (at least, an alleged witch) in England took place.

Its rather odd name is partly Anglo-Saxon and partly Norman-French and means "Lookout Wood". In recent years it has grown a great deal as a residential area and its small central core of streets with their shops have almost a town-like appearance. An older building of interest is the l7th century manor house.

The clock tower in the heart of this lovely village has a gabled roof and a stunning weathercock on top.

The church of St Mary Magdalene has a splendid 13th century tower and the spire, one of the finest in the district is one worth seeing, and it would be easy to see, too, from where the gallows once rested.
